Abstract

The article describes the activity of the West Siberian Department of the Russian geographical society in the study of the history
and culture of the Kazakh people on the materials of the Steppe region. There search conducted by scientists was of great importance for the knowledge, history, culture and life of neighboring Nations, strengthened the ties between the Kazakh and Russian progressive intelligentsia. The basis of this article went exploring Siberian ethnographers such as: I. Slovtsov, G. E. Katanaev, G. N. Potanin, M. V. Pevtsov, A. I. Colocci, N. M. Yadrinzev, N. N. Balkashin, S. I. Gulyaev. They studied not only Western Siberia, but
also the countries of Central Asia and part of Western China. An important role in the study of the history and culture of the Kazakh
people made an outstanding Russian scientist ethnographer, folklorist, one of the ideologists of the Siberian regionalism G. N.
Potanin. In General, the activities of the West Siberian Department of the Russian geographical society was of great importance to
explore the Russian public with the history and culture of the Kazakh people.
