Abstract

The integration of Kazakhstan into the modern educational community has significantly increased interest in learning a
foreign language. A mandatory component of teaching a foreign language today is the widespread use of multimedia
technologies and the introduction of audiovisual materials in the educational process. The article discusses the use of a
foreign language feature film as a means of forming the language, speech and socio-cultural competencies of students. The
article presents a phased system of work on an authentic feature film in English. The fragments of the films “The King’s
Speech”, “The Devil Wears Prada”, “American History X”, and “The Silence of the Lambs” are considered as illustrative
examples. A set of tasks has been developed aimed at developing and improving foreign-language communicative
competence. It is concluded that when creating a certain set of working methods and observing the sociocultural orientation
of authentic material, a more effective formation of students' communicative competence is possible.
